Assumptions and definitions

  1. The earth is a perfect sphere with a perimeter of 40000 km or 21600 nautical miles
  2. Consider the straight line that connects you with the center of the earth, and the point (which we will call X) where this line crosses the surface of the earth. Your height is the distance from you to point X.
  3. The distance to the horizon is measured from point X along the surface of the earth.
